Back in ancient times, the rabbit symbolized fertility and new life, which made it a popular symbol associated with the spring equinox. This is where the word “Easter” comes from. As Christianity began to spread throughout Europe, many pagan traditions were adapted and incorporated into Christian celebrations, and the Easter bunny was one of them. Since the rabbit represents new life and fertility, it was a perfect symbol for the resurrection of Jesus, the central event of the Christian Easter holiday.

The Easter bunny first appeared in written records in 16th century Germany, and German immigrants brought the tradition of the Easter bunny to America in the 1700s. Over time, the Easter bunny became even more popular thanks to the chocolate and candy industries, who began producing Easter-themed treats.

Today, the Easter bunny is beloved by kids and adults alike. Children look forward to receiving Easter baskets filled with candy and treats, and participating in Easter egg hunts where they search for coloured eggs hidden by the Easter bunny.
